Visual Artist in Healthcare,
St Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight. Working for Healing Arts on arts
projects with Mental Health patients and special needs clients at day centres
across the Isle of Wight and at Sevenacres, the acute mental health unit at
St Mary's NHS Hospital.
The Residency involved working with a wide range of clients with mental health
problems and needs; liasing with healthcare staff to evolve therapeutic practises,
using creative tools such as drawing, collage and photography as therapeutic
tools towards improving self-esteem and creating a better environmental framework
for continuing recovery.
Clients were invited to make drawings of favourite or remembered places where
they had felt particularly well or free from stressful mental states. In eight
programmes of workshops clients have been encouraged to draw aspects of nature
that appeal to them or that have a therapeutic effect.
