ART REVIEW

FINDING THE HAND OF KINDNESS firstsite, Colchester, Essex, CO1. Saturday 12 October 2024 – Sunday 23 February 2025

"Alongside Ostler’s exhibition, you’ll find the works of Leonora Carrington (from Sat 26 Oct). Both artists’ shows reveal a fascinating connection, exploring how their artistic careers were shaped and sometimes impacted in different ways by caregiving responsibilities and the challenges of gender bias." firstsite website.

"Playfulness...tinged with gentle sadness,....there is humour there as well, ...and a willingness to be abstract."

I'm quite drawn to Distributed Network in the catalogue; it seems quite different from many of the works presented there and seems to have a great willingness to be abstract. You refer to post-minimalism in the catalogue (which is a "group" of artists that I love deeply; Eva Hesse, Robert Smithson, and Richard Serra are amongst my "heroes"!) and that makes sense in relation to that work in particular.

I enjoy the playfulness in many of the other works, too.  Sometimes it strikes me as tinged with gentle sadness, which is perhaps one of the emotions experienced in care-giving. But there is humour there as well, which matters.
